Can Water Henna Form Benzene? A Customer's Question, Fully Checked

A customer asked whether the citric acid and sodium benzoate in Water Henna could react under light and heat to form benzene. The answer, checked against FDA and WHO data: the possibility converges on zero. Here is why.

People who use Water Henna tend to care deeply about their health, so questions like "Is this really not chemical henna?" and "Is it truly 100% natural?" come in more often than you might think. Among them, one has stayed with me.

The Customer's Question: "Could It Form Benzene?"

A customer who had already bought the product asked a very specific question about carcinogens. In essence: "Your ingredients include citric acid and sodium benzoate. Each is safe on its own, but if the two react under light and heat, could they not form benzene? Benzene is a carcinogen, and I have a medical condition, so I want to use this with peace of mind — please explain."

I will admit my stomach dropped for a moment. I had sold this so confidently as natural; even if it passed the MFDS review and was legally fine, I needed to know for myself whether benzene actually forms. So I went straight to the lab.

Yes, Benzene Can Form in Theory — But

First, the answer to whether citric acid and sodium benzoate can react to form benzene was "yes." Given enough of both, plus energy such as light, it is theoretically possible. My eyes widened — but the next part was what mattered. Could benzene, then, form in Water Henna? The answer was "no — the possibility converges on zero."

This concern is not new. The idea that vitamin C, citric acid and benzoate together can yield benzene drew attention when consumer groups brought lawsuits over drinks like Coca-Cola and Pepsi in the US and UK, in 1990 and 2006. In the end, the FDA examined 200 samples over two years and found benzene at around 5 ppb in only ten of them — very tart orange-juice-type drinks — below the WHO's 10 ppb guideline, so most were cleared. The UK later set a stricter limit.

Why the Possibility Converges on Zero in Water Henna

Water Henna contains far less sodium benzoate and citric acid than such drinks in absolute terms, and even that is diluted several times over — there simply is not enough to drive a reaction. On top of that, the packaging is designed to block oxygen and light, so the reaction conditions do not hold either. Unless you have a drink as vitamin-C-rich or heavily citric as summer cranberry or orange juice, the lab explained, this reaction is realistically very hard to trigger.

Decisively, Water Henna is not swallowed like a drink; it is applied warm to the scalp. With the possibility already near zero and no ingestion involved, there is all the less to worry about.

After Sending the Answer

Only after a full day of questions, study and digging through FDA materials could I send the customer both an answer and the references. I was grateful to give an unwell customer solid grounds to colour with peace of mind, and the exchange left me more confident in the product too. (For the record, I am leaving the specific comparison figures and brand names out of this post — as before, I would rather not risk a "low-quality blog" penalty over anything touching the large brands.)
