Our first review finally landed on Amazon — and it was one that called Water Henna "Henna Gods," about as warm a welcome as I could ask for.
"I Won't Spit at the Henna Gods"
A natural-blonde customer in the US wrote: "I don't understand how it's possible to have cured henna instantly, but you know what, I'm not going to look the henna gods in the face and spit at them. I'm a natural blonde and henna regularly. If your hair is longer than mine you'll need many more packets. I left mine on for about two hours and still got beautiful results. This photo is maybe a week later, as it's darkened a bit. Will continue to buy!"
I loved seeing the soft colour she got, and above all the review was nothing but praise, so I floated through the whole day. "Henna Gods." No one had ever called me a god before, and I could not stop grinning.
Why "No Curing Time" Is Surprising
This is exactly the part she found astonishing. Powder henna, once mixed, has to sit anywhere from a couple of hours to twelve before the colour develops — a wait called dye release, as the lawsone migrates out of the leaf into the liquid. Water Henna finishes that release during manufacturing and holds it in the essence pouch, so the moment the oil and essence are mixed smooth, the paste is ready. To a powder-henna eye, it looks as if a step is missing.
Why Two Hours When Thirty Minutes Is Enough?
Water Henna's advantage is that thirty minutes is plenty — yet she left it on for two hours, because only a Korean instruction sheet was in the box. She did what she had always done with powder henna, and that is entirely our fault; it is why we later made English instructions. Happily, leaving it longer does no harm. Henna deposits colour rather than lifting it, so extra time simply deepens the shade instead of over-processing. Her colour darkening over the following week is normal too — the pigment keeps oxidising for about 24 hours after rinsing.
What Henna Does on Blonde Hair
Since she is a natural blonde, one thing is worth saying plainly: on light hair, henna comes out vivid. Lawsone is a translucent orange-red that layers over whatever is underneath rather than covering it. On grey or blonde there is nothing to mute the red, so it often reads more strongly than the picture on the box. If you want that warmth, blonde is the best canvas there is; if you want it calmer, tone it down with indigo.
